I. Working Principle of Solar Application for RV and Camping

The use of solar energy for RV and camping is mainly through solar panels mounted on the roof which absorb sunlight and transform DC electricity into AC for daily use by inverter.

Usually output power of solar energy is 12V DC, 24V DC,48V DC. To supply power to electrical appliances of 220V AC, it is necessary to convert DC power generated by solar power generation system into AC power.Therefore, DC to AC inverter is needed. In some cases, DC to DC inverter isalso needed, such as converting 24V DC power to 12V DC power. The converted electricity power can be used immediately or stored for evening or emergency use.

II. Solar Energy System for RV and Camping

Solar energy system consists of solar panels, solar charging controller, inverter and battery.

Solar Panels:the most common width is 1.5m, 250W to 375W. At least two solar panels can be mounted on the top of a typical RV, in total around 500W to 750W. If above 750 watts needed, it’s better to choose folding solar panels due to the limited area onRV roof.

Solar Charging Controller:it's a charger in nature. PWM is low efficiency not so many people use it anymore. Nowadays, efficiency of MPPT is more than 95%.

Battery:usually size of battery is matched according to user’s needs. The common methodis to connect the additional battery with the starting battery of vehicles through the isolator, forming a combined power supply mode through generatorand solar energy.

Calculation of system power generation: calculate according to 600W, providing the time of sunlight is 5 hours, 600W * 5H * 0.7 = 2,1 kWh

III. Installation and Mounting of solar energy on RV

Volume of power generation mainly depends on the area of solar panel and sun light volume.

1. When mounting solar panels,you need to calculate how many watts of solar panels you need according to electricity consumption of electric appliance of the RV, and then calculate how much battery you need according to how many days power storage you need, and then check if the RV roof area is enough for solar panels.

2. Take typical Iveco RV for example. The roof of this vehicle is around 3.5 * 1.8m, and you can mount solarpanels between 500 to 2500 watts. It is worth noting that you should use folding solar panels when above 750 watts because the roof area is not enough.

3. During installation, surface of solar panels should not be trampled or covered with shadow.

4. If possible, you can customize full glass components for window of the RV, which will not affect the lighting in the RV but also generate electricity. However, the cost is higher.

IV. Case Sharing of RV Solar System

Electric load of sample RV:

1. A small refrigerator:0.4 kWh per day

2. Electric Rice Cooker(600W): twice a day for one hour each time;

3. TV: 24 inches,LED, for two hours every day. When use a computer occasionally, must turn off the TV.

4. Led lamp:1 set.

According to above mentioned electric loads, a 750W solar power generation system is suitable for you.
